Eye Mag Blog…

Eye Magazine (like the Monocle’s and the SSIR’s of the world) is a real quality publication that I simply cannot afford. As a result I am that guy sitting in the corner of Borders with 40 magazines piled next to me. Fortunately for cheap bastards like myself, most magazines have blogs that offer a lot of the same content with the same eye for presentation. Recently Eye Magazine began a blog, which is nice because it is a UK title and ends up costing like 25 bones stateside. There are only a handful of posts at this point, but so far so good, and its future looks promising with the Eye team stating that they will be

asking a wide range of writers to contribute notes, reviews, work in progress, rants, praise and other comments to help us understand this brave new world while we get on with the job of making the world’s most collectable design magazine.

Honestly though, now they just need to revamp their main site. It’s an inaccessible piece of crap, completely inappropriate for a magazine like Eye.

Ascenseur Pour L’Echafaud…

With summer at its apex, its time to sit back and take a hard look at what the hell we have been doing with ourselves over the past 3 months. And that’s where Miles’ Ascenseur Pour L’Echafaud comes in… hot, sticky, summer music. Its music to stay up too late to. But its also music to fall asleep to. Most of it is so incredibly sad that its unbearable in the wrong mood. Music to drown sorrows in. It is perhaps the greatest movie score ever composed.

Cai Guo-Qiang Retrospective…

Kinda pissed I missed this in NYC a few months back, but search ‘Cai Guo-Qiang’ on flickr and its almost as good as actually being there… sigh…

psfk…

If you read this thing at all, you know it draws a bunch on psfk. If you aren’t down they are a kind of creative consulting agency out of NYC with offices in London, Hamburg, Manila, Sao Paulo, and Shanghai. Anyway, other an being kinda’ a big deal they are pretty progressive/critical when it comes to their outlook on modern advertising/marketing/consumer culture/environmental stuff. So… right… they are a pretty cool/smart outfit and I have been lucky enough to blog a bit for them recently (here and here) and hopefully Ill do more soon. Anyway, look for ‘em at psfk.

Matt Levine… Coolest. Dude. Ever….

This might have been the funniest, strangest, most thankGodILiveInPhillyingest article I have ever read. I thought these guys only existed in Ricky Gervais films. Matt Levine, my hat is off to you.

Please read all the comments.

Ama Kip Kip… “Popped in Africa”… Nkosana Lesedi…

Caught Ama Kip Kip on psfk a week or so back. AKK is a kind of premium street brand out of South Africa. I am told the shirts, designed by Nkosana Lesedi, are selling for like $35 a pop (or whatever that is in South African rands). Presently they only exist online as a Facebook group, but their site will be up in a few weeks. (Right now you can only pick up one of their shirts at Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg). People are talking and “the Bape of SA” is a phrase you are hearing a lot… we’ll see; but there is certainly some hype building up around the brand. Watch for them to go worldwide in 10 days or so. Boom? Bust? or Neither?

Derringer Cycles… OK, I really want a Derringer Cycle…

Pushin’ products, pushin’ products… Starting grad school across the city in the Fall so I am in serious need of a transportation option that doesn’t have anything to do with Septa. Trolling the internets I came across this ridiculous contraption by Derringer Cycles. OH LORD how nice this ride would be! Feeling lazy? Pop on that 180 mpg engine and enjoy the ride. Feeling eco-conscious? Get your lazy ass on those pedals. No more car-share for me! Even with gas at $10 a gallon, this would still be cheaper than the bus… Its like a Vespa for a dude (or a motorcycle for a chick). Ok, ok, unfair sexual stereotypes aside, this thing’s got a little for everyone. But then you start looking online for prices and they are conspicuously absent from any sites. That’s the catch, initial outlay looks like its around 3,500, which is kinda’ an issue (read prohibitively expensive). Oh well. I’ll settle for lusting after that iPod touch.

Update: Oh, and they are only sold in LA. For me, its probably for the better.
