Jay-ZXMarvin Gaye Mick Boogie MixTape… Brooklyn Soul… And Jay leaves Def Jam…

Check out jayandmarvin.com for the Mick Boogie Mix.
Yeah, and Jay leaves. I am really interested in where he takes things. I mean, the guys got some branding power behind that name.

TERRY RICHARDSON X BELVEDERE… Counter Puntch: Gawker… COUNTER PUNTCH: N+1…

First saw this on the brilliance. That’s Vincent Gallo in the black (yeah, the guy defacing the art). I was surprised at the Richardson choice by Belvedere, but considering the guy is doing limited edition Ts for Uniqlo I guess its not that crazy to be doing some of this more big name/mainstream stuff.
Gawker’s take on the whole thing was amusing

Ostensibly, the ad is meant to position Belvedere as the downtown drink of choice and other brands, such as Grey Goose, as the stuffy uptown beverage. But! What it really gets at is how both Gallo and Richardson have become silly parodies of themselves. Gallo, who fancies himself an artist, takes a Sharpie and defaces an admittedly mediocre painting with a scrawl and stands back as if he’s created something truly trenchant. It’s almost as self-indulgent as when he concocted a whole movie around Chloe Sevigny giving him head. Richardson, on the other hand, is shown so hellbent on documenting his own fame that he can only train his lens on a lens trained at him. Whatever. It makes me want to have a drink but definitely not Belvedere.

And then N+1 was all like, GAWKER, you’re irrelevant! And Gawker was like, Shit, you’re right! And Gawker managing editor Choire Sicha and editor Emily Gould simultaneously quit. oh SNAP!

Hellboy II trailer… I am probably one of the very few who has actually read the Golden Army. Hellboy has been the only comic I read for a long time. The early books are amazing. Needless to say, especially for a purist like myself, the first Hellboy was a lot of junk. Hopefully this one will better live up to expectations.

Junot Diaz Interview… here. If you haven’t picked up The Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, git it.

Manhattan’s Rents Dropping???

And this absolutley ridiculous video of Girl Talk from New York Mag. When is he coming back to Philly?

StartingBloc Fellowship…

Was accepted into the Spring 2008 Starting Bloc fellowship program in NYC today. I applied a little while back and then forgot about the whole thing. So it was surprising to get an e-mail today telling me I was in. Anyway, I’m pretty siked. I am big into social enterprise and hope to get an MBA some day in the not too distant future… I always saw myself as a grizzled old physician in some medical outpost in an obscure corner of Africa trying to get by without enough resources; maybe this way I can run a business that will get more done than I would ever have been able to as a Doc… We’ll see…

Official M.I.A. Paper Planes Video… Download: Paper Planes (Remix feat. Bun B and Rich Boy) … Diplo w/White Ts, White Belts @ The NEW Barbary…

yo, I love the video. And the Beastie Boys cameo? Niiiiice. M.I.A.s situation is so weird though; you ask any random music loving fanboy on the street about her and for the most part people are pretty aloof. While at the same time she is making Time Magazine’s top 10 albums of the year. Sure, its a kind of indie/hipster-cred boosting pick, but it also goes to show how she exists in this strange very mainstream/very obscure limbo. Quite frankly, I am really surprised that Time chose M.I.A.s Kala for their top 10. Not to mention LCD Soundsystem… anyway…

Went dancin’ at The (”New”) Barbary in Fishtown (that’s Philly for you out-of-towners) and caught sight of M.I.A.s former-beau Diplo helping out with the turn-tables (read macbooks) with White Ts, White Belts. Its a pretty cool venue for people looking for new haunts. Cheap at hell, and kinda’ right around the corner from The Arts Garage if you are up for after-hours.

And two more Lupe vids…

I know; Lupe, Lupe, Lupe… What’s going on here? Yeah, well, The Coolest is dropping soon, and these videos are pretty bomb. So get over it. Lupe is going to be around for a little bit. I found them both on Kanye’s blog (1 and 2), which is so weird.

(The Coolest doesn’t drop ’til the 18th, but MTV is streaming if for free right now here.)

Bookstores… Selexyz Dominicanen… Maastricht, Netherlands… Via Cool Hunter… Lello Bookstore… Porto, Portugal…

I am always fascinated by places of commerce that act as places of artistic inspiration at the same time… I am also into books. And so this brings us to Selexyz Dominicanen, a shop in the Netherlands that I saw a little bit back on CoolHunter.

The Selexyz Dominicanen reminded of this place in Porto called the Lello Bookshop. It opened in 1906 and basically looks the same as it did then.

A little closer to home; Neri Antique Lighting, on South St., is the most beautiful store (place?) I have ever been to in my entire life. It is where I first began to think of the beautiful store concept. If you are ever in Philly, you will probably go to South St. This place completely blew my mind. Little known fact; last time I was there I found out that you can go upstairs.
