Lux. Mags… How Portfolio Got Awesome…

Picked up Conde Nast’s new business mag Portfolio the other month and was really underwhelmed. I remember Tom Wolfe’s article on hedge funds that read just like the millions of you-wont-believe-how-rich-these-guys-are, human interest stories. OK, yeah, do well in finance, get into hedge funds, and make unimaginable cash… I’ve read this article like 30 times already. (Slate mag has a great write up of it here). So, anyway, I am always looking for a cool biz mag and just figured that Portfolio won’t be it; nothing unique in writing about hedge fund managers.

But then the 3rd issue came out the other week and had this giant crazy article on Nigo’s Bape (the Brilliance beat me to it here), how free youtube-esque porn sites are ruining the online porn industry, $3 flights, and a number of other pieces that are def worth the read.

Wrote about Monocle the other month and how its minimalist design really overwhelmed its lackluster content. Portfolio is, in a way, on the other end of that spectrum. Its layout is pretty standard fare for magazines while its content, thought not always great, is at least relevant and usually interesting. Anyway, check it out, Portfolio’s Nov. 2007 issue.

And here. Love Stop Smiling.

A-Ron… Suit… Counter-suit… New aNYthing Line…

Philly’s PEDESTRiAN turned me on to aNYthing’s new flava’. I don’t think I am as disappointed as most, but I have serious fears for the post-A-ron era of aNYthing.
It’s tough when things have to come down to this but when sales begin hitting $1 mil… well, litigation is the only way to go. So we learn that after A-Ron dropped the L-word on Sept. 11. In response the current owner, Kiernan Costello, has filed a countersuit alleging that A-Ron broke a bunch of contracts. They are asking for $5 mil. damn.
Complex mag actually went through the paperwork of the countersuit and by their explanation of its contents it sounds like it reads as a kind of who’s who of the downtown NYC streetwear scene; even going into A-Ron’s whole thing with the 205 club.
I guess if it was a cordial parting that would be one thing, but this begs so many questions; perhaps most importantly for the brand, what do the customers do? A-Ron HUSTLED to start this thing and keep it moving; how much of aNYthing is A-Ron himself? Is it something completely different now that its under new leadership? Will aNYthing hit that tipping point that brings it over into the mainstream (as in the case with BAPE right now) or will this whole thing cause the waters to recede a little? Time, friends, time.

Vid from HP.
And another HP interview here.
And that whole brand underground article from the NYT.

Architecture Post!… Bldg blog…

Recently Slate published a slideshow that gives a nice run down of the booming world of modern skyscrapers. It’s very general but gives a good sense of what’s happening in skyscraper design in the post-9/11 world.
And speaking of slide shows, concierge.com has an interesting 23 slides of “The Visionaries” of our time. Here I find Jean Nouvel’s Torre Agbar a really interesting structure. (It might also be featured in the Slate show). The idea of increasing the base of the structure could really take modern buildings into a whole new realm; specifically, as these structures come to take up more and more physical space (what other kind of space?) you start looking at communities within communities, ‘enclosed’ neighborhoods within cities. Cool, right? And how about NYC’s PATH terminal?
I have also been BIG into Geoff Manaugh’s BLDG Blog recently. It’s hard to explain, but if you have any passing interest in architecture and its wider societal implications — it’s all about connections — check it out.

The New Yorker… Sasha Frere-Jones… The Downfall of Indie-Rock…

Really interesting audio and article from Sasha Frere-Jones, a music critic with the New Yorker, on how indie-rock has strayed. In the audio I’m not really down with his poo-pooing the Decemberists but oh well. It’s an interesting listen (honestly, I didn’t read the article… but I’m sure it’s also good… probably).
